Wait, it’s 2012, right?

A recent survey revealed that nearly one in ten men believe it’s okay to hit a woman. One in ten!. Not only that, but also 48 per cent of men agree that “if a woman wears provocative clothing, she’s putting herself at risk for rape.”

Alberta’s female premier, Alison Redford, wasn’t too happy with the some of the survey results either saying they made her “sick to [her] stomach.”

The article doesn’t make it clear exactly how the question was asked that resulted int he one in ten stat. And the “provocative clothing” question is problematic because many who answered the question may simply have thought that “more risk” was implied in certain behaviours without believing that these were necessary or appropriate outcomes, and this is may imply ignorance but is not unexpected.

There is no question that domestic violence is rampant and that many men’s attitudes (along with an unfortunate number of women) are seriously backward. But I can’t help but wonder the degree to which the particular questions and how they were asked in this survey made things seem worse than they are.

Of course, on the other hand, it is Alberta.

The provocative clothing results aren’t shocking at all, and are being misinterpreted.

The belief that dressing like a trollop increases the risk of attack is not condoning violence or dismissing it in any way. It’s these men’s opinion on the state of society or put better; a statement about the expected behaviour of other men. I don’t trust the honorability of a total stranger in the middle of the night either.

The 8% who disagree with the “never hit a woman” rule is about the percentage of people who are generally trash in all avenues of their lives.

It’s always the owness of the stronger partner to control the violence in an altercation but I would think that the percentage of women who disagree with the “never hit a man” rule would run close to 100%.

Most men would also agree that we do stupid things enough to warrant a smack once and a while and have little sympathy for our brothers when they get a palm to the cheek.
